Counsel to the Federal Government, Charles Adeogun-Philips has said the Federal High Court should not grant bail to Justice Sylvester Ngwuta who was arraigned on Monday for alleged money laundering.
Ngwuta was one of the judges whose houses were raided by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS).
Adeogun-Philips said N27m was found in Ngwuta’s Ebonyi residence bathroom but later disappeared.
Philips said the apex court judge ordered that the cars and the money be hidden.
He argued that Ngwuta will destroy evidences against him if granted bail.
He said “the bags contained 27m in cash”, and that “they were moved from the location”.
”There are sufficient grounds that the defendant will interfere with potential prosecution witnesses and with evidence,” he said.
“We object to bail being granted because we are of the opinion that the defendant may conceal or destroy evidence.”
But Ngwuta’s lawyer, Agabi said the offence committed was a bailable one.
Justice John Tsoho adjourned for an hour to deliver a ruling after listening to the arguments.
