In what has become routine, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced its daily report on the tracking of the novel coronavirus last night on social media – thirty four new cases confirmed (18 in Lagos, 12 in Kano, 1 in Delta and Niger). This is unprecedented. Kano, in particular, is becoming a hot bed for the spread of the contagion, which recorded its index case quite recently and now showing a surge in such a small window.
Comparatively, Nigeria is still not testing as much which explains its low cases of the virus. South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt and even Ghana have significantly high coronavirus cases because of their increased testing capacity. With Nigeria’s squalid healthcare infrastructure, we don’t have the capacity and manpower to test more and this should be a cause for worry.
