Plateau Assembly elects UNIJOS final year student as Speaker

A 500-level Law student at the University of Jos and member representing Jos East constituency, Abok Ayuba Izam, has emerged as Speaker of the 9th Plateau House of Assembly.

Nominated by the member representing Jos North-North constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Baba-Hassan, and seconded by the member representing Jos North-West constituency, Hon. Esther Simi Dusu, 33-year-old Ayuba was unanimously elected on Monday at the Assembly’s inaugural sitting

The Assembly also re-elected the immediate past deputy, Hon. Salleh Yipmong, representing Dengi constituency as its Deputy Speaker, following his nomination by the lawmaker representing Langtang Central constituency, Daniel Nanbol of the PDP and was seconded by Nanlong Daniel who represents Mikang constituency.

In his acceptance speech, the newly-elected Speaker thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed on him and promised not to fail them, assuring the lawmakers that his leadership will not discriminate based on tribe, religious, gender or political affiliations.

“As Speaker of this noble assembly, I promise to serve with the fear of God, high sense of responsibility and humility,” he said.
