During his campaign, President Muhammadu Buhari, made a promise to Nigerians that he would reduce the cost of governance.
He may have started taking steps to fulfill that promise, as Punch Newspapers reports that Buhari has concluded plans to slash his salary and reduce his personal emoluments.
It is believed that the President expects the Vice-President and other political appointees to take a similar decision.
Buhari reportedly made the decision on Friday but for the time being, decided against making it public in order to consult with his close associates on how best to approach the issue without being seen as dictatorial.
However, it was not revealed what percentage of Buhari’s salary and emoluments will be slashed.
Based on data from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, President Buhari will earn a monthly salary of N3, 514, 705.
He is also entitled to a regular hardship allowance and 50 per cent of the basic salary, which is N1,757,350.50.
President Buhari is also expected to reduce State House budget as well as the Presidential Air fleet which is reported to have about 10 aircraft.
