Reckless driving: Drunk soldier kills 3 people in Cross River

A military officer in Cross River State has reportedly caused the death of three persons and shattered his own legs, after driving his car recklessly while intoxicated.

The soldier, who was reportedly attached to a Brigadier in Ogoja area of the state, visited a nearby town known as Okuku, to attend the Yala new festival celebration and while there he allegedly had too much to drink. The officer then proceeded to drive his Honda Accord car despite his inebriated state and as such an accident ensued.

According to reports, He decided to return to the barracks located a kilometre away against the advice of his host.

A source said: “He was drunk and we advised him to allow someone drive the car to the barracks but he refused.

“It was while he was speeding back that he hit an Okada (commercial motorcycle) and the car ran into a tree, killing the two boys on the Okada and his girlfriend.”

The woman, a mother of two, was said to have lost her husband, a soldier, to the Boko Haram violence in Maiduguri, Borno State in 2010.

Her younger brother said she was the one sustaining the family.

He said: “We don’t know what to do, because we feed from the profit she made from selling drinks.”
