Reps urge FG to provide FRSC officers with arms

The House of Representatives Wednesday, said officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) should bear arms in a bid to effectively carry out their responsibilities of saving lives.

Highlights:

  • The Green Chamber noted the increasing cases of violent attacks, harassment and intimidation of personnel and officers of the FRSC by highly placed individuals, motorists and hoodlums across the country, particularly in Zamfara, Jigawa, Abia and Lagos states.
  • The members noted that from 2015 to date, there have been 149 cases of attacks on personnel and 201 cases of damage to properties and equipment of the commission.
  • They, therefore, urged the Federal Government to facilitate the procurement of arms and ammunition for FRSC officers.
  • Hon. Solomon Maren while moving the motion noted that despite Section 19 of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, which stipulates that personnel of the commission who are exposed to high risk in the enforcement of the provisions of this Act, shall have same powers, authorities and privileges, including power to bear arms, as are granted by law to members of the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Government has not provided road safety officers with arms to enable them protect themselves in the course of performing their duties.
  • When the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara called for a vote on the motion, it was passed without dissent.

  1. who them go shoot,is it innocent people driving or armed criminals. This means u settle police 4 two junctions at the same road n settle army at the 3rd junction n then settle FRSC armed officials by fire by force.nawa oo

  2. They must save lives by force.
If they are tired of working, let they go back to the NPF where they belonged.
We are in a civilized world where they should not be confrontational; but should use modern gadgets to track down offenders and book them.
You need to see the rate at which these guys use Government vehicles and gadgets given to them to carry out only extortion.
They only enter road users vehicles or contravene them when negotiations fail and they start struggling for steering.
Which road user does not know or observe these?
The arms would only assist them raise their bribes.
Why must an FRSC guy get to the extent of fighting?
Besides, and in most cases, they mount their road blocks the same place with the Police.
Unfortunately, also, the Police checks the same things/documents with them.
Why them this duplication of functions and waste of human resources?

  3. Another reason for unfortunate Nigerians to not know who’s gonna play shoot em up with you cuz they are officials in uniform.

  4. Do some one who carry arm block road save life…this is promoting more killers
