Reuben Abati has gone mad again, and nobody should be surprised

Reuben Abati

There’s a somewhat unfortunate fact of living and, in particular, growing up in Nigeria that’s everyone from all corners of the country can agree upon – insulting adults is perhaps but a step or two away from being an outright abomination. The resulting stigma from acts of disrespect aren’t exactly easy to wash away.

Who can forget the bizarre tale of Iyiola Omisore allegedly removing the late Bola Ige’s cap from his head at a public event, and going on to hit said head with the same hat. You can all but hear the collective gasp from whoever might have been present at this supposed event. That this story is even said to be the origins of accusations of Omisore masterminding Ige’s murder underscores a clear point – if you can disrespect an elder, you can kill. Now, I most certainly have no murderous tendencies, and I do recognize that the subject of this piece is an elder in many ways, but this afternoon, I am going to fold my scarf of home training and remove this man’s cap.

This morning, everybody’s favourite media uncle decided that the internet has been too calm lately. Somehow, his only solution to that problem was to provide us with a fresh injection of stupidity.

Uncle Reuben, in his usual manner of writing opinion pieces, (many of which, by the way, he has no idea about) punished the entire media space with an article titled, “#BBNaija: Television as madness”.

An interesting concept, to be fair. The headline alone was intriguing enough to get myself and many other people clicking and reading.

Again, to be fair it would be a great thing if the dumbest thing the former spokesman to immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, did was describe one of the housemates, TBoss, as a “Jezebelic manipulator” and the “champion Delilah of the Big Brother Africa series”.

But no.

What was waiting was a deluge of senselessness of such confusing intensity that I was forced to conclude that this man had lost his mind. But of course, it took only a few minutes for me to realize that there wasn’t much left to lose to begin with. This is a man whose public utterances range from the wildly untrue to the head-scratchingly vapid.

The insanity of Dr. Abati, (Mr. PhD in Theatre Arts with a specialization in Dramatic Literature, Theory and Criticism from the University of Ibadan,) did not begin today.

In his piece on the reality TV show, Big Brother Nigeria, Abati, (who makes me question many of the people to whom the word ‘Doctor’ are attached) displayed not only a poor depth of thinking, but a sheer lack of grasp of the facts of the show with his dramatic writing (which, by the way, was his specialization during his time obtaining his PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan.)

Remember his article, entitled, The spiritual side of Aso Villa“? That time when he went crazy in his bid to defend government ineptitude. Abati had the audacity and effrontery to tell Nigerians “when Presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than what we can imagine”. What a spiritual wow!

Abati added that “some of the women became merchants of dildo because they had suffered a special kind of death in their homes” as some of his colleagues “relied on videos and other instruments to entertain wives”. Isn’t it obvious that Abati has a fetish for lewd images and videos?

In his raving display of madness, Abati suggested that the Aso Villa should be converted into a spiritual museum, and abandoned, because according to him it was haunted by demons. But again, if he was not beside himself, won’t the museum he suggested be visited by human beings and not animals? So was he saying that demons only haunt houses and not museums? Maybe the so-called demons have affected his thinking faculty turning his head upside down.

On October, 20, 2016, in an article entitled, “Aisha Buhari and that BBC interview”, Abati, said, “I used to explain in communication coaching classes and to the bosses whose media I managed, at one point or the other that they should never feel obliged to say things they do not want to say. No matter how aggressive the journalist may be, they should be careful what they say.”

Didn’t Abati think about this statement before he showed lunatic tendencies by ogling about the breasts of TBoss? But again, what do we know, he may just be a pervert.
