Nigeria’s only boxer at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics Efe Ajagba has crashed out of the Games.
The 22-year-old who was one of the country’s medal hopefuls lost his quarter-final bout to Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko by unanimous decision in the Super Heavyweight 91kg category.
Dychko’s height was a problem from Ajagba as he capitalised on the Nigerian’s inexperience, as he was awarded 10-10-10 by all three judges against Ajagba’s 9-9-9 in round one.
The Kazakhstan was handed the same points (10-10-10) as against Ajagba’s (9-9-9) by the judges in round two and three.
It took Ajagba just 23 seconds to knockout his Trinidad & Tobago opponent Nigel Paul in the second round needed to qualify for the semi finals by defeating Dychko to secure a medal for Nigeria.
Nigerians will now bank on the football team to return home with a medal as the Dream Team Six face Germany in the semi finals on Wednesday night.
