Senate approves continuation of police recruitment

The Senate has approved the continuation of the recruitment of 10,000 personnel into the Nigeria Police Force after it had earlier suspended the exercise, Punch reports.

This was revealed by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina-South) in Abuja on Monday.

The Senate had earlier asked the Police Service Commission to suspend the recruitment over perceived irregularities in the selection process.

The upper chamber argued that the selection should be on the basis of lacal governments instead of state which the Police Service Commission was insisting on.

Ibrahim disclosed that the commission could now continue with the recruitment.

“We have resolved the issue and the recruitment would be done on local government basis. Very soon, the exercise will resume,” he said.

He said, “Nine personnel would be recruited per local government area. The policemen would be used to form a unit for community policing in all the 774 local government areas of the country.”
