Senator McCain nails the coffin on Obamacare repeal

Early Friday Morning in major dramatic fashion, Senate Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare hit a brick wall when Senator John McCain, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined with Democrats to kill the “skinny repeal” plan, CNN reports.

McCain, Collins, and Murkowski joined all 48 Democrats to reject the Republicans’ skinny repeal plan, sinking it with a vote of 49-51. Following his return to Capitol HILL, McCain had voted for a motion to proceed to the bill on Monday after and refused to reveal what side he was voting for till the midnight vote was held.

According to Politico, Vice President Mike Pence engaged McCain at length, but his mind seemed to be made up. After leaving the chamber he said; “I do my job as a senator,” and I voted against Obamacare repeal bill “because I thought it was the right vote”. McCain’s “NO” was received with an audible gap throughout the chamber leaving his colleagues and even Democrats stunned by his vote.

After months of unending negotiations and meetings, it seems the Republican lawmakers have had enough failure with their bid to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act known as Obamacare but find it a hard pill to swallow.
House Majority leader Mitch McConnel said after the vote; “This is clearly a disappointing moment,” McConnell said. “Our constituents have suffered through an awful lot under Obamacare. We thought they deserved better. It’s why I and many of my colleagues did as we promised and voted to repeal this failed law.
He added, “We told our constituents we would vote that way. And when the moment came, when the moment came, most of us did. It’s time to move on”.
