Teen gets killed after trying to retrieve his stolen phone with an App

This is even more scary because phones get either missing or stolen on a daily basis and apps are constantly being created to enable finding them but learning that this can lead to one’s death is scary.

CBC reported today that a Canadian teenager who lost his phone and tried to find it using a locator app was shot and killed when he went to retrieve it.

Jeremy Cook, 18, of Brampton, Ontario reportedly left his phone in a cab over the weekend. He used an app to pinpoint the location of the phone, and he and a relative went to the address to get it back. That’s when police say things turned violent.

Cook was reportedly confronted by three men in a car. Police don’t know all the details about the confrontation, but they believe Cook attempted to grab the driver’s side door when the car tried to speed away. It was then that shots were fired. Cook sustained multiple gunshot wounds and later died as a result of his injuries.

“No one ever would have predicted or even thought that a loss of life would have resulted from a loss of a phone,” police spokesperson Ken Steeves told reporters. Police involved with the case are cautioning anyone else who might use an app to track down their missing phone to exercise extreme caution.

“The app itself is a great tool to have. Nobody could ever predict that what occurred was going to occur in that case,” Steeves told CBC. “But if you suspect there’s any potential for violence at all, we certainly encourage people to contact police. We’d be more than happy to come out and investigate with the hopes of retrieving the phone.”

The investigation into Cook’s death continues. The car and phone were found abandoned later but police are still seeking three suspects, CBC reports.
