10 things to note from The Voice across the world

The final of The Voice Nigeria airs tonight where one out of the 48 contestants who entered the show will clinch a recording deal, an SUV worth 7 million Naira and above all the bragging rights of being the winner of the first edition in Nigeria.

While we anticipate who is going to be that deserving winner, here are 10 things to note from the other adaptations of the global phenomenal reality TV music competition – The Voice;

  1. The Voice originated in the Netherlands. Known as The Voice of Holland, it was originally created by Dutch television producer John de Mol.

2. John de Mol – who is also the creator of Big Brother, first created The Voice concept with Dutch singer Roel van Velzen and the show first aired in 2010.

3. A  total of 231 artists have won The Voice adapted in forty-six countries. Each winner is given a recording contract, a monetary prize, and a title as that country’s The Voice.

4. 11 countries have stopped airing their own adaptations of The Voice. They are; Argentina, Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic & Slovakia, Hungary, Norway, South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland.

5. Only 4 countries in Africa have their own version of The Voice including Nigeria. They are South Africa (1 season) Mali (Upcoming season) and Angola (1 season).

6. From season 3, The Chinese version allowed people who can speak Mandarin  – a group of related varieties of Chinese spoken across most of northern and southwestern China to participate.

In 2016, there was a controversial issue between the producers of the Chinese version of the series and Talpa – the network that airs the Holland version – on the copyright of The Voice of China.  So from season 5 on, the title will temporarily be known as Sing! China.

7. Starting from its next season, The Voice Angola will allow people from Mozambique to enter into the competition.

8. The Voice of Greece is also broadcast in Cyprus; Cypriots are also allowed to join the show.

9. The American version of The Voice is also broadcast in Canada and select Caribbean countries; people from all Canadian provinces (excluding Quebec) are also allowed to join the show, as well as people from select Caribbean countries.

10. The first ever winner of The Voice was Ben Saunders of The Voice Holland and the most most recent is Christoper Rivera from The Voice USA.
