Today’s Daily Brief: Council of State agrees on February elections, Lagos declares Friday work-free day, 6000 APC members defect to PDP in Sokoto, and more

An estimated 6,000 members of the All Progressives Congress in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defectors were received in Wamakko by Alhaji Ibrahim Milgoma, Chairman of PDP in Sokoto State.

Governor Aliyu Wamakko is from the local government.

The spokesman for the defectors, Alhaji Abubakar Gedawa, said they joined the PDP to get justice and equity.

The Federal Government has processed 300 applications from foreign journalists, who applied to cover the forthcoming general elections.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday.

Yemi-Esan said, “In line with the mandate of the Ministry of Information to create media access to report on the activities of the Federal Government, it has so far processed 300 applications from foreign journalists to secure visas and come into the country for the elections.

The Edo State Government has accused the former Commissioner for Investment, Public and Private Partnership, Mr. Denis Idahosa, of fraudulent activities of “industrial scale,” which it said caused him to quit his appointment.

Idahosa, who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party last Friday and quit his appointment, had accused Governor Adams Oshiomhole of insulting President Goodluck Jonathan, which he also cited as the reason for his resignation.

But, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Louis Odion, ‎and made available to The PUNCH, the state government said it “had received series of petitions, mostly from overseas, alleging that Mr. Idahosa was engaged in fraudulent activities‎,” which it confirmed.‎

The National Council of State meeting has ended in Abuja with members insisting that the February elections must proceed as scheduled.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also given the assurance that the presidential election will hold on February 14 as scheduled.

INEC told the National Council of State that it was ready to conduct the February elections.

The Lagos State government has declared Friday, February 6th a work-free today to enable public servants pick up their permanent voter’s cards (PVC).

Fashola appeals to Private Sector employers to consider allowing their workers close early to enable them collect their PVC

The Lagos State Government Thursday declared Friday a work-free day for its workers just as the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, enjoined private Sector employers to release their workers early to enable those of them who are yet to collect their Permanent Voter’s Card to do so in their various Polling Units.
