Today’s Daily Brief: Police will arrest politicians with armed security, Don’t constitute Fayose’s impeachment panel – PDP lawmakers, Four Injured as presidential helicopter crashes in Lagos, and more

Preparatory to Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, the Nigeria police on Friday vowed to arrest any political office holder who arrives polling centres with armed security personnel.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Training and Development, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital while speaking on the level of preparations for Saturday’s election.

He added that the police authorities has deployed all necessary personnel across the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory so as to record another huge success like that of presidential and national assembly polls in the country.

PDP factional leader of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dele Olugbemi, has written the the State Chief Judge‎, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, asking him to ignore a request to set up a panel to investigate allegations raised in the impeachment notice to Governor Ayodele Fayose.

He was reacting to a letter written to the CJ by the embattled Speaker and leader of the All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, on Thursday.

The letter had requested the CJ, Daramola to raise a seven-man panel within seven days of receipt of the letter to investigate Fayose and his Deputy, Dr. Oluosla Kolapo, over allegations of impunity, violence, stalking and other constitutional breaches.

One of the helicopters in the Presidential fleet on Friday crashed in Lagos injuring all four persons onboard.

The copter, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Super Puma, carrying two pilots and two passengers, was said to have crashed around 11am at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMIA).

Although ‎the NAF claims the aircraft was being used for training, The Nation learnt that it crashed landed immediately after takeoff.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Benue State, Prof. Istafanus Dafuang said yesterday that 2 security personnel that were deployed to secure the presidential election were burnt to death in Logo local government area of the state.

This is just as he disclosed also that 26 card readers were destroyed in Guma local government area of the state, even as electoral materials and results were also damaged in 24 polling units of the area.

The yet to be identified gunmen that kidnapped governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko’s younger brother have released the second victim.

The second victim, Alhaji Ango Garba, was a former Education Secretary in Wamakko local government and was said to be with the governor’s younger brother before the gunmen came.

Ango Garba was said to have been released without any demand for ransom by his abductors far away, around Walijam Forest, close to Gwandu, in Kebbi State.
