In a bid to find a lasting solution to the insecurity within the country, President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, met with Nigeria’s security chiefs to discuss the military operations in the North-East and in oil rich Niger Delta.
According to The Punch, the security chiefs refused to give comments on the outcome of the meeting with the president.
The security chiefs in attendance include: Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ibas; Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura; the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Ayo Oke; and the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris.
Also present at the meeting were members of the Federal Executive Council. They include: Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. Mansur Dan Ali (retd.); National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Munguno (retd.); Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the new Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, will be visiting the Niger Delta region.
According to a Punch report, the IGP is expected to visit Gbaramatu Kingdom and Itsekiri community of Ugborodo on Friday and hold talks with leaders of the community on how to end the violence in the region.
The IGP will also assess the level of damage done on oil facilities in the region.
A source who spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity revealed that, “It’s true that the new acting IGP is visiting Warri South West in Delta State tomorrow (today) to hold talks with some leaders of Ijaw and Itsekiri following recent attacks on oil facilities in that area.”
“The IGP is very interested in resolving the renewed crisis in the region. His visit is part of the dialogue option being explored by the Federal Government to halt further hostilities especially on oil and gas installations in this area.”
