Nigerian troops are currently engaging gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Residents are reporting that there has been a consistent exchange of gunfire between the insurgents and Nigerian troops stationed in the city.

Reports say the insurgents are making efforts to advance into the Borno state capital through Dalwa, a surburb of the city.

An officer of the Nigerian army spoke with Premium Times saying, “It is the Boko Haram terrorists we are battling with now as you can hear. They wanted to enter through Dalwa. But we are tackling them.”

The terrorists have previously made several attempts to overrun Maiduguri but have consistently met a stiff resistance from the army who have shown readiness to protect the integrity of the state capital.

We shall bring you more details as soon as we get them.
