Rio Olympics: Nigeria beats Sweden 1-0, qualifies for quarter final

Nigeria’s U-23 football team on Monday morning beat Sweden 1-0 to book a place in the quarter-final of the men’s tournament.

In the keenly contested encounter, the “Dream Team Six” held their nerves to secure victory making it back to back victories in the competition.

Nigeria’s lone goal was scored by striker Sadiq Umar in the 40th minute.

The Swede’s launched an onslaught in search of an equaliser but Nigeria’s team were rock solid in defence.

Nigeria had beaten Japan 5-4 in their opening fixture. Today’s victory ensured Nigeria has the maximum six points with a game to spare. The other game in the group between Colombia and Japan ended 2-2, meaning Nigeria will top Group B regardless of the outcome of their last group game with Colombia.

Nigeria will face Colombia on Wednesday in their final group game by 11pm.
