LMC and NPL Clubs

Recently, clubs in the Nigerian Premier league (NPL) have had issues with the League Management Company (LMC).

YNaija had a chat with sports journalist, Deji Adegbenro, who gave details on the present situation between the NPL clubs and the LMC.

The LMC introduced the Club Licensing Regulation, to help sanitise the league of irregularities

The LMC had introduced the Club Licensing Regulation, to help sanitise the league of clubs who had bad stadia, owed player salaries and lacked documentation of transfers and medicals.

Adegbenro said the clubs were protesting because the LMC had prevented them from signing players as a result of not meeting the minimum requirement of not owing player wages – the only rule that the LMC imposed for this season. He said only three clubs – Abia warriors, Bayelsa United and Kano Pillars – met the requirement at the beginning of the season.

“These three clubs were the ones not to owe their players at the beginning of the season and were given the license to buy players. Other clubs were still indebted to their players.”

The LMC cleared Seven more clubs (Heartland, Sunshine Stars, Enyimba International, Warri Wolves, El-Kanemi Warriors, Rangers International and Lobi Stars) to sign players after they had cleared up players salaries.

Deji further said that the Club Licensing Regulation was in the interest of the clubs, as CAF plans to introduce the same regulation by October. And clubs who did not meet the regulation requirements would not be allowed to participate in any continental competition.
