An unidentified 12-year old girl went to her Taylor Michigan grade school, and started handing out money to her fellow classmates.
Reports state she was spotted doling out stacks of $100 bills to her friends. Some were given as much as $500.
The money was immediately confiscated by the school’s principal after word had gotten out about the student’s generosity. The principal then alerted authorities of the incident.
When Police arrived, they found over $20,000 in cash in the 12-year old’s backpack. They were also able to recover all of the money she had already given out to her peers.
Police Chief Mary Sclabassi told The Detroit News, “Had word gotten out to maybe someone other than some other 12-year-olds, it could have put [the student] in a dangerous position.”
The girl received the money from another child who lives across the street from her parent’s house.
The unidentified neighbors claimed that the money was in fact theirs, but police are still investigating before turning the money back over to them.
Teresa D. Winnie, the assistant superintendent for the Taylor School District, said in a statement Tuesday that local officials “do not have a specific protocol for this type of situation.”
“There was no threat to the student body in the building and the matter is currently in the hands of the Taylor Police Department,” Winnie said.
The Sixth Grade Academy, where the 12-year old attends, is a public middle school with roughly 700 students.
