It is the international women’s day today and as part of our celebration of the women folk, we present our list of 10 Nigerian originals who rock our world. Mamas who have dreamed and have dared, lived and learned and remain endlessly inspiring.

Betty Irabor

From the very first Genevieve magazine issue with Ego Boyo, the launch issue with former CNN weather girl Femi Oke and up until the most recent 10th anniversary issue (with herself on the cover thank you very much), madam Betty Irabor has blazed the trail for magazine publishing geared towards a female target audience. ‘’The trick is to do it afraid’’ she says of her 10 year sojourn in the cut-throat magazine publishing world. Add an effective breast cancer awareness drive to her designer belts and we dare say, she must be very afraid.

Dora Akunyili

Little has been heard from Professor Dora Akunyili since her doomed campaign for a senate sit went bust but her unrivalled track record of public service as both director general of NAFDAC and information minister continues to stay with us. A wife, mother, academic and later-day politician, Akunyili remains one amazon whose services, Nigeria will always be grateful for.

Folorunsho Alakija

How does one go from fashion designing to owning a lucrative oil bloc? Sheer luck, political lobbying, cold-hearted calculation or a combination of all of these. Regarded by Ventures magazine as the wealthiest black woman on the planet, Folorunsho Alakija’s story though mostly untold remains an inspiring one to us and a reminder that indeed all is possible.

Mo Abudu

The talk show host and evolving media mogul put the classy back into television presenting with her landmark talk show, ‘Moments with Mo’. Not content with resting on her oars, she is set to launch her new tv station Inspire Africa and is hard at work developing content and attracting talent to her cause. We love a woman who knows what she wants.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Our relationship with the Havard trained economist these days might fluctuate between veiled suspicion and open mistrust but none can deny the fact that the ‘Iron lady’ as she is known in some quarters brings a remarkable amount of dedication and professionalism to her current role as the Coordinating minister of the economy. Following an inspiring but unsuccessful bid for the presidency of the World Bank, she returned to address pressing economic demands like the fuel subsidy clean up, the Sovereign Wealth Fund, port reforms and the YOUWIN project.

Obiageli Ezekwesili

She has been long out of government (where she last served as Education minister) but in a recent convocation lecture at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, she spewed out some figures that had the government’s media and economic team running helter-skelter. Oby Ezekwesili’s antecedents at every position she has served- from the Due Process office to the World bank has been stellar and she does all these maintaining a calm humble mien.

Onyeka Onwenu

The elegant stallion has remained a relevant part of the entertainment industry for years- even all through the occasional dab into politics. Every president wants her on their inauguration programme and her classics are a favourite with all generations of music lovers. What can we say, everyone loves Onyeka Onwenu.
