[The Activism Blog] Findme Alert: Standing in the gap for missing Nigerians

The plight of Missing persons in Nigeria has received the attention of a Non-Governmental organization – Findme Alert.

In a newsletter released by the group on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, it states that between 2007 to 2011, an estimate of 9,000 people were missing in Nigeria, just as indicated by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Also, according to a report by international reward centre, 607 people get missing everyday which amounts to about 221,644 missing individuals in a year; totaled about 4,432,880 in 20 years.

In a bid to help find missing persons, @FindmeAlert Twitter and Facebook handles were created for online citizen’s engagement towards creating awareness which could help find missing persons around the world.

The NGO is reaching out to world influencers to join the humanitarian mission, by giving them a shout out on their social media platforms and blogs in a bid to increase their social media following and thereby help to reach more people around the world in other to bring back home safely their missing loved ones.

According to Find Me Alert, People often go missing due to certain reasons like dementia, amnesia, crimes like human trafficking, accident and death in a location where they cannot be found by loved ones and many others.

This novel idea by Find me Alert will go a long way in addressing the plight of missing persons in Nigeria and also unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of many Nigerians among which is the popular Lagos broadcaster, Alhaji Rasak Gawat who has been missing since July 6, 2012, and Bukola Olowookere, an employee of Ecobank, who has been missing since May 5, 2016.
