A Tijjaniyya cleric, Abdulaziz Dauda, popularly known as Abdul Inyass has been sentenced to death by hanging, by a Sharia court in Kano.
Inyass and 13 others were accused of making blasphemous statements against Prophet Muhammad during a Maulud festival held on June 31, 2015.
He was arrested on August 18, 2015 in Abuja and taken to Kano, where he faced trial on a two-count charge of blasphemy and inciting crisis.
An Upper Sharia court Rijiya Lemu had in June 2015 sentenced Inyass’ accomplices which included a woman and 8 others to death.
While the sentencing of Inyass was delayed, the Kano Sharia court of Appeal found the others guilty in accordance with section 110 and 302 of the penal code.
