Cyber Stalking: Blogger sues EFCC over arrest and detention

Blogger, Abubakar ‘Abusidiqu’ Usman who was arrested by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives on August 8, 2016 has dragged the Commission to court accusing it of violating his fundamental rights.

Usman who is the publisher of the online news platform, Abusidiqu explained his ordeal while in EFCC custody saying he believes he is being deliberately victimized and harassed by the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu over articles published on his website sometime in 2015.

“It is clear to me that Magu’s EFCC is in clear violation of the law. Aside granting me bail, they refused to say anything else and have continued to keep possession of my properties many of which contains my private information,” he said. “The EFCC is still holding on to my phones, laptops, internet device and other unrelated documents. They told me clearly that they are going to subject them to forensic analysis which I believe is in breach of my privacy.”

He accused the Commission of illegally confiscating his property and breaching his fundamental human rights saying he has “proceeded to the court for the enforcement of my Fundamental Rights which the EFCC is in clear breach of. My lawyers have informed me that the Commission has been duly served and we are now awaiting the court to commence the case.”

Usman was arrested on charges of Cyber Stalking and released on Adminitrative Bail after spending thirty six hours in EFCC detention.
