Did the Oscars host go too far with the Chris Brown and Rihanna joke?

Chris-Brown-and-Rihanna

Both Chris Brown and Rihanna have expressed their desire to be left alone, not wanting the baggage relating to Brown’s previous assault tainting their present romance. The couple obviously wants to start fresh, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen, mostly because the media can’t resist using the couple’s past as a punchline for jokes.

Last night, Oscars host Seth MacFarlane created a pretty awkward moment when he used the couple in a ‘Django Unchained’ reference. While introducing the movie, MacFarlane said, ”This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.” The reference was to Brown’s 2009 assault of Rihanna on Grammy night.

But MacFarlane had enough awkward jokes to go around. The Oscars host used 9-year-old Oscar-nominee Quvenzhané Wallis to mock George Clooney for only dating younger women: ”To give you an idea of how young she is, it’ll be 16 years until she’s too old for Clooney.”

He even went so far as to make a ‘Lincoln’ joke that many people felt crossed a line.

“I always thought the actor who got most inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth,” said MacFarlane when discussing actors who had played Lincoln in movies.
