Ghanaian-British radio presenter, club DJ and event promoter, Abrantee Boateng popularly known as DJ Abrantee was recently announced as the UK brand ambassador of Senditoo mobile top-up app.
DJ Abrantee winner of the Best Radio Personality at the BEFFTA (2014), Best DJ at the African Music Awards (2010), Best DJ at the BEFFTA Awards (2009) and Best Entertainer of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards (2006) is hailed as one of the UK’s biggest and most influential DJs and TV personalities, and one of the pioneers of commercialising Afrobeats in the UK.
DJ Abrantee began Afrobeats Sundays, the first Afrobeats club night in London in July 2011, from there he launched off Afrobeats Sundays in October 2011 – this is an annual Afrobeats club tour which visited 12 cities around the UK and Ireland and helped making Afrobeats more mainstream. That same year (2011), an acrobats mixtape –Afrobeats Mix Volume One followed. “I was born into it through my mum and dad as Ghanaian music was influenced by Fela Kuti who created the acrobat sound,” he tells Timeout.
His next major gig was at the prestigious Glastonbury festival and also in 2015 as a Fame Music judge for the Afrobeats: Search for a Star. He is one of the founders of the annual Official Ghana Independence Celebration in London and has been active with charities like the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.
