Less than two years ago, Nonso Amadi, an Abuja-based singer and producer released Alone, a debut project that catapulted him into SoundCloud playlists and mixes, especially after the success of “Tonight” and “Radio”, two stand alone single releases. About the same time, singer Odunsi began releasing music off his SoundCloud account, before the eventual drop of his debut EP, Time of Our Lives last year.
The mutual rise of both artists, who are currently being touted as next generation Afropop hitmakers made a lot of speculators assume they would fuel a recursion of another infamous inter-contemporary cold-war. But it seems their generation is not only looking to re-write the narrative for African music, they also have no vested interest in thrones and ego battles. So it comes as no surprise that after hinting the possibility, the duo came together to release the joint EP now known as War
Except for opener “Ocean”, produced by Higo and Harry, War is entirely produced by Nonso Amadi and Odunsi. War doesn’t seem to carry any multi-layered statements within, and admittedly, the pop music high-road is a slippery slope. But War is a four track tape that fuses neo-R&B and new wave Afropop for that perfect sweet spot late night radio music.
Reviews are a dying art so I will save you the trouble of analysis by imploring you to listen to the tape by yourself below:
