This is not something you see every day. While there really isn’t any public stand on homosexuality in Ghana, we’re starting to see many more Ghanaians come out and add to their discourse on sexuality. Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Appiah in an interview with website Think Big offers his insights on being a gay man in Ghana and how religion continues to shape public perceptions while it is at odds with social Ghanaian ideologies. He brings up some interesting ideas, especially on his own sexuality and his own journey to self-acceptance.
He believes that Africans have had to juggle many discordant identities with some level of harmony, building complex identities and he thinks when it comes to sexuality, Ghanaians have become pretty proficient at finding balance.
