These are the top ten stories that drove conversation this week.
1. Epe Six
The Ondo State government in collaboration with security agencies secured the release of the kidnapped Igbonla-Epe school boys.
The boys who were with the kidnappers for 63 days, May 25 through July 28, have since re-united with their parents.
The Presidency has commended the efforts of the Lagos State Government and others who helped ensure the boys’ release.
2. Fashola vs NASS
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing has tendered what seemed like an apology to a House Committee after the Assembly alleged that he was making comments that might incite the public against them.
3. Nnamdi Kanu
The leader of the indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has continued his ‘tour’, this time visiting Owerri, Imo state, where he met with a large crowd.
4. Atiku on 1999 Constitutional review
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has expressed worry over the passage of the “Devolution of Powers t o States” bill, saying the All Progressives Congress (APC) had promised it.
5. Obamacare
The Obamacare repeal was finally given a no-no on Friday when a vote by the Senate went in favour of the stay of the health care system.
6. Forbes list of Billionaires
While Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote dropped 54 places in the World’s Most Richest men, making him lose his spot as Africa’s richest, Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos displaced Bill Gate, who has led the pack for 18 years – the lead, however, only lasted for a morning.
7. Okorocha vs Fani-Kayode
The two of them who haven been attacking themselves for reasons unclear to Nigerians continued this week. In a recent post, Fani-Kayode called Okorocha a slave. Read here.
8. 1999 Constitution Review
As promised, the National reviewed some aspects of the 1999 Constitution and have received kudos and knocks. The Nigerian Senate led the way, while the House of Representatives followed suit. However, the bill that drew much attention is the one that allows younger people to run for a government position.
9. NGF delegates visit ailing Buhari
The second batch of Governors – a delegation from the Nigerian Governors Forum visited President Muhammadu Buhari in London.
10. Recession
Contrary to what the Minister for Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had said about Nigeria coming out of recession, the Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele gave a contrary opinion.
