Grass-cutting probe: We are yet to receive any court order – Shehu Sani

by Dolapo Adelana

Chairman, Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the North-East, Senator Shehu Sani, has said the Committee was yet to receive any court order restraining the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal from appearing before it.

Sani, who spoke at plenary on Thursday said the panel would pursue its mandate to conclusion, insisting that Lawal and others summoned must appear before it.

The lawmaker said his panel received a letter in which the SGF said he would be unable to appear before it because he had another engagement at the same time on Thursday.

He, however insisted that the letter was not in relation to any court order.

He said, “I stand to make some explanations here. I stand as the Chairman of Senate (Ad Hoc) Committee on the Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the North-East. We were scheduled to hold a public hearing today to give a second opportunity to those persons who were either deliberately or conspicuously absent in the first sitting (hearing) we had last year.

“Today, the newspapers were awash with reports that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, has taken us to court to restrain our committee from doing its work. We have yet to receive any court order (originating summon) in that respect, perhaps later. But what we did receive is a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”
