A woman in California has been honoured after she saved a baby’s life by taking it out of its dying mother’s body.
36-year-old Iria Wolnick, who was heading to her mother’s funeral, saw a car accident on a Texas highway and she stopped to help the injured; she had no idea she would be delivering a baby.
The occupants of the car were 19-year-old Edward Ortega, his wife, Niser Saldana-Quilantan, also 19, and their 2-year-old daughter, Adrallis.
Niser, who was 8 months pregnant, had a serious abdominal wound and through it Wolnick saw the baby’s hand and its head, she knew she just had to deliver it.
Despite having no previous medical training, the massage therapist brought the healthy baby girl out of the wound.
The mother was pronounced dead at the hospital but the baby turned out fine and was named Emma Lyn Anahi Ortega.
