Lil Wayne’s professed drug addictions and hospitalisation is a warning about the dangers of codeine

One of the greatest marketing tools for drug addiction these days have been hip-hop artists who rap about “popping Mollys,” “sipping sizzurp,” and drinking until they pass out every single night.  But these drug addictions can cause serious long-term damage in those who are affected, and should not be taken lightly.  The recent hospitalizations of popular rappers Rick Ross and Lil Wayne have involved serious seizures, and both of these men aren’t expected to live long lives due to embracing a dangerous and counter-productive lifestyle.

There are serious side effects to serious codeine consumption, and Lil Wayne regularly admits that he loves to consume codeine as part of the purple “drank” that is very popular in the south.  According to Emedicine Health, here are some side-effects to extreme codeine consumption:

  • slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting, shallow breathing;
  • feeling like you might pass out;
  • confusion, agitation, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior;
  • feelings of extreme happiness or sadness;
  • seizure (convulsions); or
  • problems with urination.

Less serious side effects include:

  • feeling dizzy or drowsy;
  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain,;
  • constipation;
  • sweating; or
  • mild itching or rash

Maybe these drugs should not be taken lightly. There is also the question of whether or not hip-hop artists are doing the world a favor when they serve as walking billboards for extreme drug and alcohol use.  The recent reports about Lil Wayne being on his death bed and having his stomach pumped due to drug use are being refuted.  But one thing that remains true is that, according to doctors, if he continues to use drugs at this rate, he is probably digging himself into an early grave.
