Former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has gone on Twitter to demand the release of Japheth Omojuwa, the YNaija FrontPage columnist who was earlier today arrested by the police in Abuja.

Omojuwa was involved in a protest in Abuja over the unfortunate stampede which happened in during the National Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment.

Over twenty people died in the stampede with several others sustaining varying forms of injury in Abuja, Niger and Rivers state.

Japheth Omojuwa was arrested with Uche Briggs, a Public Relations professional and social media influencer.

Several calls to both individuals Omojuwa and Briggs have been unsuccessful.

According to Samson Itodo who was also at the protest, both Omojuwa and Briggs were “beaten up by officers of the NSCDC at Apo quarters in Abuja.

“I have spoken with Omojuwa and Briggs. They have been taken to a room for questioning. I am here with them,” he added.

See Oby Ezekwesili’s tweets below:

I refuse to believe that @omojuwa and @UcheBriggs are being BEATEN while under inexplicable arrest for protesting #NISTragedy . Impossible!

If I were in Abuja, I would as a Concerned Citizen go out there in support of @omojuwa and @UcheBriggs

I EXPECT that officials of our DSS have acute sense of how ANGRY Citizens are about #NISTragedy and so will nip anything that fuels it more!

Learning to bear the pain of Citizens’ PROTEST is hallmark of Democratic Maturity. Our Government MUST learn this. You can’t GAG Citizens.

Update: There are unconfirmed reports that the Japheth Omojuwa who was previously held at Area I police station is presently in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS).

We shall bring you more details as we get them.
