Obasanjo tried, but failed to make peace between Saraki, Buhari and APC leaders

Senator Bukola Saraki’s trip to seek the assistance of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in resolving the crisis in the All Progressives Congress, may have ended in futility.

According to Punch Newspapers, President Buhari as well as leaders of the APC were still upset at the manner in which Saraki emerged Senate President against the party’s wishes, by forming an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party.

On Friday, June 19, Saraki, paid a visit to Obasanjo, reportedly to seek the former president’s intervention in the crisis.

It was reported by Punch that shortly after Saraki’s visit, Obasanjo made a telephone call to Buhari advising him to mend fences with Saraki.

The former president reportedly advised Buhari to work with Saraki and allow the party take disciplinary measures against Saraki, but the President was said to have been non-committal.

Some senior party leaders were also said to have been doubtful about the success of Obasanjo’s intervention, especially because of the alliance between Saraki and former vice-president Atiku Abubakar.

One of the leaders was quoted to have said: “It is not a secret that Atiku is solidly behind Saraki. How the senate president thinks Obasanjo will back any move by Atiku is what we don’t understand. Atiku was the first person that Saraki visited when he emerged as senate president. The ex-president will definitely not turn Saraki back but deep in his heart, he knows which camp he belongs to.”

Meanwhile, a senior official of the APC , was quoted to have said the following on the matter: “From all indications, all sides in the crisis are maintaining their hard-line positions on the crisis. It seems Saraki is not ready for reconciliation. His group is insisting on its position. The Lawan group has given its conditions for peace and the President believes that there must be party discipline.”
