Opinion: Asari Dokubo needs to start thinking before opening his mouth

by Babatunde Odunlami

dokuboIt is proof of Nigeria’s lawlessness and monumental decadence that riff raffs, thugs and lowlifes like Asari Dokubo,Tompolo, Boyloaf can threaten the nation because of the electoral fortune of their kinsman.

I read with consternation the public outburst of Asari Dokubo against the Yorubas in the build up to the 2015 elections. He threatened fire and brimstone against the people of Southwestern Nigeria if GEJ doesn’t win the election. To Mr Dokubo and his likes in the Niger Delta, the Yorubas are snitches and traitors who always pander to the North and can’t be trusted. He spoke about the role the Yorubas played during the civil war and seem to lay the blame at their doorstep if Jonathan doesn’t get re-elected in 2015.

It is time to set the record straight! During the Yar’Adua/cabal saga that shook the foundations of this country. When a cabal held the nation to ransom and refused to allow Jonathan take over the office of the President as constitutionally stated the entire nation stood up for the rule of law. A certain body named “SAVE NIGERIA GROUP” was in the forefront of the vanguard and public outcry for the rule of law! This group was made up of and chiefly led by personalities from the Southwest. Among them are ; Pastor Tunde Bakare, Professor Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, Joel Okei-Odumakin, Mr Yemi Odumakin to name a few.

These prominent personalities led many patriotic Nigerians to march on Abuja to the National Assembly and Aso Rock to put pressure on the National Assembly before they invoked the “doctrine of necessity” ‎and Jonathan was constitutionally installed as the acting President and then went on to be C-in-C after the death of Yar’Adua. Where was Asari Dokubo, Tompolo, Boyloaf and other opportunists  who now see the Presidency as their collective inheritance?

It is on record that a Yoruba man, in the person of General Olusegun Obasanjo, is the harbinger of Jonathan’s emergence as the Vice President and President of Nigeria. OBJ backed him and ensured he won the primaries ahead of the likes of Atiku Abubakar. It is a fact that the South west gave Jonathan a bloc vote to win the election. All states in the region except Osun voted en masse. Without the bloc vote of the Southwest it would have been difficult if not impossible for Jonathan to win the 2011 Presidential elections.

It is a travesty for Dokubo or anyone in the Niger Delta to point accusing fingers at the Southwest or even threaten the Yoruba people because of President Jonathan’ odyssey. If the handwriting is on the wall that the Yorubas won’t support Jonathan as a bloc is it due to backstabbing or malice or “selling out” to the North like Mr. Dokubo and his likes believe or that President Jonathan has performed below expectation? It seems Mr. Dokubo is an erratic figure, one who speaks now and thinks later.

It is proof of Nigeria’s lawlessness and monumental decadence that riff raffs, thugs and lowlifes like Asari Dokubo,Tompolo, Boyloaf can threaten the nation because of the electoral fortune of their kinsman. ‎A disgrace that former militants and fugitives can become government contractors (for securing oil installations), hobnob with those in the helm of affairs of Nigeria and get involved in organised life. What rubs salt to injury isn’t the impunity of these scoundrels but the impotence and apathy of government or security agencies in calling these men to order!

No zone or tribe or people can hold Nigeria to ransom anymore! The progress and unity of Nigeria ‎is sacrosanct. ‎Mr. Jonathan isn’t the President of the Niger Delta but President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Presidency can’t be hijacked by a few! The mandate of the people of Nigeria is what is required to occupy the highest office in the land. Mr. Dokubo and co should accept this reality before their cup becomes full and begin to run over!
