YNAIJA ENDORSEMENT: In Plateau, APC’s Simon Lalong is our pick for governor

Despite opposing his aspiration over zoning in Plateau State, Senator Gyang Pwajok eventually emerged the governorship flagbearer of the PDP in the state. Since his emergence as the flagbearer, 12 of the 16 governorship aspirants that contested and lost the in the PDP primaries have petitioned the national secretariat of the party, rejecting the outcome of the primaries.

There is the likelihood that the embattled governorship aspirants may dump PDP for another party to actualize their dream.

The APC on its part, has chosen a former speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Simon Lalong, as its flagbearer in the governorship elections.

Lalong, who is backed by the former state governor, Joshua Dariye, was speaker of the state’s House when Dariye was governor, and presided over the impeachment of Dariye. Which puts their seeming reconciliation in context.

However, the biggest threat to Mr. Lalong’s ambition, is the party’s
adoption, at the national level, of General Muhammadu Buhari, for whom the state has not much love. It is on record that Buhari has never won election in the state in all his attempts to win the Presidency. Lalong would need more than the support of APC to even stand a chance.

Goodluck Jonathan, who is expected to won Plateau State at the federal level, may just be the joker needed by Pwajok at the elections. Pwajok also has in his favour, the fact that Plateau State has always been governed by the PDP since it got hold of it in 1999. This means that despite their own differences, the incumbent governor, Jonah Jang will rally round support for him.

However, we must put both men up to scrutiny. Under Lalong’s leadership, the Plateau State House of Assembly showed some spine, passing laws that the governor at the time, Dariye, did not like. Mr. Pwajok on the other hand, has been in the National Assembly for some years, and has not put forward any Bill of note. On that evidence alone, it is clear, to our minds, who has at the very least, a faint idea of what his job may entail.

It is with that in mind that we endorse the candidacy of Simon Lalong, and urge the people of Plateau state to, even if not at the national level, think about changing governing party at the state level.
