‘Russians’ attempt to hack Senator Marco Rubio again

By Itunuoluwa Adebo

Despite all the sanctions against Russia for their alleged interference in the last US elections, it appears they are not stopping there. On Thursday, former Republican primary Presidential Candidate and current US Senator Marco Rubio said he and his former staff are being targeted again. He said the first attempt to hack his former Presidential campaign team who had access to internal information about his campaign came after he announced his intention to run again as Senator. Though unsuccessful, the first attempt was made in July, 2016.

Rubio said the second attempt came on Wednesday from an IP address from an unknown location in Russia. He said this before a Senate intelligence committee on Thursday.

“Former members of my presidential campaign team who had access to the internal information of my presidential campaign were targeted by IP addresses with an unknown location within Russia. That effort was unsuccessful. I would also inform the committee within the last 24 hours, at 10:45 a.m. yesterday, a second attempt was made, again, against former members of my presidential campaign team who had access to our internal information — again targeted from an IP address from an unknown location in Russia. And that effort was also unsuccessful.” Rubio said on Thursday.

Though the IP addresses show a Russian footprint, experts say that it is normal practise for hackers to mask or camouflage their real location.
