The “Living Wallet,” which was invented by a Japanese company, syncs with a bookkeeping smartphone app called Zaim. The product’s official website claims it has two modes depending on your balance: Save Mode and Consumption Mode.

When you are running short on cash, your wallet will do its part to see that you save money. If you try to reach for it, the wallet will slink away from you or spin around to dodge your hand.

In the video, it appears that the tricky wallet is not that fast, so, when you inevitably catch it and open it, the wallet will start yelling and asking for help.

If that doesn’t freak you out enough to put it down, the Living Wallet has one final trick up its sleeve. The wallet will call or email your mom so she can serve up some good old fashion guilt and motherly advice to discourage you from making an unnecessary purchase. However, if your bank balance is in the green and you have the extra cash to spend, the savvy money holder will switch to Consumption Mode and encourage spending. Its website says you can set the wallet to announce the rankings of popular products on Amazon, which will be accompanied by the soothing sounds of Beethoven. According to its website, there are no plans to sell the Living Wallet to the public, and no word on how much something like this would even cost. Either way, you can still watch the enjoyable clip demonstrating how the prototype works and think about whether a gadget like this would work for you.
