A magistrate’s court in Ibadan has ordered for the caning of man accused of stealing N1,040 from a motorist on Thursday.
Defendant, Segun Ogunmola, was arraigned on one count of stealing.
Ogunmola, who is a commercial bus conductor plead guilty to the theft but blamed the crime on poverty.
“My father died since I was a toddler and I don’t know my mother’s whereabouts. I have no option than to fend for myself. I have returned the money to the owner,” he said.

It was confirmed that the money was returned but Chief Magistrate Adams Adesina of Mapo Magistrate’s Court insisted that he should be flogged publicly to serve as a warning to others.
According to reports, Ogunmola was caned in the court by a policeman.
