Finally, APC Senators unite – Read why

OPENNASS

Senators of the Senate Unity Forum and Like Minds, held an unprecedented meeting on Tuesday, with the aim of uniting after being at loggerheads for the past 9 months.

While the SUF is a group of Senators who opposed Bukola Saraki’s emergence as Senate President, Like Minds is filled with proponents of the former governor of Kwara state.

Though belonging to the same party – the All Progressives Congress – the Senators have found it hard to get along but it appears that as a result of the ongoing trial of Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, they have decided to unite.

The meeting which had in attendance 10 senators – five from each of the two camps – took place at the Asokoro residence of Aliyu Wammako, a former Sokoto State governor.

At the end of the meeting, Wammako disclosed to Premium Times that ‘effectively, the meeting has brought an end to crisis in the Senate between APC Senators who now support the Senate President, Bukola Saraki’.

Another Senator, who belongs to the Senate Unity Forum, speaking anonymously, was quoted to have said that the lawmakers chose to sheathe their swords in order ‘to have a united APC caucus’.

The Senator revealed that it was agreed during the meeting, that the composition of Senate committees should be reviewed to conform with the Standing Rules of the Senate and to also be reconstituted to ‘favour APC Senators’.

“The number three point is the supremacy of our party, loyalty to our leaders and support for President Muhammadu Buhari. The meeting was held in the interest our party and Nigeria.”

He however, said the meeting to reconcile and be on the same page was ‘beyond Saraki’, and more of an attempt to join ranks to prevent the Peoples Democratic Party from taking over the Senate, should the Senate President be found guilty by the CCT.

“This man (Saraki) is in court and anything can happen. So APC Senators must come together and unite; otherwise, if anything happens to Saraki in the court PDP Senators who are very united may take over the Senate.”

“And that would be a very great disservice to our party, the President and Nigerians who voted for change. So, we are now uniting like PDP Senators and are settling our differences.”
