[The Injustice Blog] We should not ignore these “weighty allegations” against Anambra health workers

There is a weighty allegation against health workers in Anambra which should not be ignored without a discussion about it.

It concerns the plight of Nigerians living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in that part of the country which might also be obtained in other parts of the country as investigation may later reveal.

Though the allegation has not generated any reply from concerned parties especially the Anambra government and its health workers, which might not happen so soon as we rarely respond to accusations in this part of the world; it’s important we put this in writing for future reference.

Aisha Edward, President of an NGO Association of People Living With Sickle-Cell Disease on Tuesday, October 2, 2017, in an interview with Sahara Reporters accused medical doctors, laboratory scientists and officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Health of exploiting the condition of SCD victims for money.

She also accused the state of promulgating a sickle cell disease law which discriminates against people living with the disease in Anambra among other irregularities.

These accusations, as weighty as they are, must not go without a detailed response from Anambra State government and other concerned parties so as to address this injustice against humanity being perpetrated in the state.

The accusation cast aspersions on the image of the government and its effort as it concerns people living with SCD which has tuned out to be a source of living for some unscrupulous individuals in the society.

The state government needs to address the issue of stigmatisation of people living with SCD by schools, churches and communities through proper sensitisation about the disease.

Also, the accusations against haematologists as it concerns selling of SCD victims blood to international organisations for money under the guise of research is another weighty allegation that must be investigated by the state to prevent the usage of SCD victims as cash cows.

While we are waiting to hear government response to these accusations, we will keep tracking this story.
