This school in Lajo is a confirmation that Lagos is not working for all

Lajo

On Sunday April 8, 2018 I paid a visit to Lajo community secondary school Igbogbo-Ikorodu after my attention was drawn to a Facebook post detailing the rot at the primary section of the school. However during the visit, I found out the local government has made some attempts to salvage the position at the primary section but government still need to do more.

Lajo community secondary school, located at about ten minutes drive away from the primary school is to say the least an eye sore. It has fallen into such disrepair that it is near impossible to differentiate it from an animal pen. There are no windows, the walls were not plastered nor painted neither do they have the necessary infrastructures like electricity and adequate ventilation to ensure that students learn in the best possible environment.

According to information gathered from residents of the community, the school runs the full secondary classes of JSS1-SS3 however they don’t have laboratories for experiment, they don’t have libraries and neither do they have a playing field of any kind for sport and recreation. The only structure that is habitable for human is the school administration block while the future leaders are kept in classes that are little more than holding pens.

While speaking with some community members, they divulged more information concerning the poor state of the school, for example because of the paucity of secondary schools in the area, students from neighbouring communities attend Lajo community secondary school, putting extra pressure on the limited resources available to the school and causing persistent overcrowding in classes.

The situation at Lajo is worse compared to what exists in other Lagos state owned secondary schools in Ikorodu, a visit to Government college and Model college Ikorodu shows the one at Lajo is a poor example of what a Lagos state owned school should be.

As much as the state Governor might be “working” in the cities, these forgotten individuals at the grassroots deserve a better deal from the Lagos state Government. Education is light and this light must not go dim in Lajo community.

Already, I’ve made a twitter post concerning this and has caught the attention of social media influencers like Mr Kayode Ogundamisi, Mr Seun Onigbinde of BudgIT, Hamzy B. Lawal of CODE among others, the Lagos state Government is yet to reply as at the time of writing this story.

The government needs to do something drastic to provide an enabling environment for this students. The itesiwaju eko goodies is yet to get to Lajo community secondary school igbogbo-Ikorodu.
