Two US attorney generals sue over foreign payments to Trump hotels

The attorney generals of Maryland and Columbia plan to file a lawsuit that foreign payments to President Trump violate the U.S. Constitution, according to reports.

Reports say that a similar lawsuit was also filed in January by plaintiffs including an ethics non-profit group. The most recent of these lawsuits however have a better chance than the others as the allegations are the first to be said to violate the constitution emolument clause.

The January case which was filed in the Manhattan course alleges the President violated the emoluments clause, by still owning his business. The clause  stops him from accepting any sort of gifts from foreign governments without getting approval from the congress.

On Friday, the Justice Department’s defense was that the suit held no water because the plaintiffs could not claim enough  specific harm, that Trumps’s business was  causing.  The government also said Trump hotel revenue does not fit the definition of an improper payment under the constitution.

The spokespeople for both attorneys declined to comment.
