President Hifikepunye Pohamba yesterday gave reasons why Namibia deemed it fit to confer the country’s highest national homour on President Goodluck Jonathan.
Pohamba said the honour was conferred on his Nigerian counterpart in recognition of the selfless contributions by the government and the people of Nigeria to Namibia’s national liberation struggle.
Jonathan who was conferred with the ‘Order of Welwitschia’ was in the Southern African country to take part in celebrating Namibia’s Independence anniversary.
The ceremony which took place at the Independence Stadium, Windhoek, had a large turn out of dignitaries to witness the conferment.
According to him, while the selfless contributions were deeply imprinted in the chronicle of Namibian history for the people to remain forever grateful despite the geographic distance, Nigeria played a prominent role together with the Frontline states in supporting the liberation movements in Southern Africa, including SWAPO of Namibia.
Responding, President Jonathan thanked Pohamba and the people of Namibia for the award, saying it underscored the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
