As much as many Lagosians have stuck to staying indoors and practicing social distancing, a few others still feel like it is all a joke, the coronavirus, and a few others are only now just coming to see the severity of not practicing social distancing as it concerns public health. On Twitter, Lagosians have reacted to not just only the newly reported cases of COVID-19 by the NCDC, as they have also drawn a pattern to the heat in Port Harcourt with Wike’s ‘Lockdown Republic.’
Exactly one week after the ease of lockdown in major cities in Nigeria, Lagos included, the NCDC has recorded a total of 1845 cases in Lagos, with 81 In Lagos State within the past 24 hours.
The NCDC remains committed to providing valid and accurate data.

While the cases of COVID-19 are rising, a few people are taking steep measures to create awareness on the need to practice social distancing in Lagos State, using Wike’s ‘Lockdown Republic’ as a point of reference. Lagosians, since the ease of Lockdown, have been slammed for picking up with business as usual with crowded spaces, crowded bank queues, and general negligence on social distancing. However, it is not the same as Port Harcourt, with Governor Nyesom Wike’s full enforcement of the lockdown in the state, many Lagosians on Twitter have applauded the governor and have expressed that maybe, Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu should do the same. Their point, basically, is that only with full enforcement of social distancing will the numbers in Lagos fall when compared with other states with COVID-19 cases.
81 in Lagos? It's getting more scary; almost 5k today now. This is not the 2020 we ordered for. Wike must have demolish the original one. pic.twitter.com/x3vpPpBPL2

Another group of people, however, has linked Wike’s extreme measures and compared it to Lagos’ attempt at setting an example with Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele after she hosted a house party during the city’s total lockdown period. Some Twitter users have called out those who are in support of Wike’s lockdown measures but criticized the Lagos State government in her attempt at setting an example with Funke Akindele. Still pointing out that it is important to set examples for defaulters, this category of people say that Wike’s measures are extreme and should not be adopted by Lagos State.
Said it before and I'd say it again.. Gov. Wike should be applauded for taking stern necessary measures in keeping safe the lives he swore an oath to protect. https://t.co/pUi0iE2MzY

While the governor’s methods may appear very extreme, many people have still applauded him for his efforts in enforcing the Lockdown in the state as opposed to Lagos State when the federal government enforced the lockdown in Lagos and other states. With many saying that Sanwo-Olu should take notes from Wike and start full enforcement of social distancing, Lagosians may only now just be realizing just how bad the issues are rising for them.
With 81 in Lagos trending, Wike, and Funke Akindele, Lagosians may just now be seeing the need to practice social distancing as the cases against them keep rising according to the NCDC. Wike’s extreme enforcement may not be what Lagos needs but there sure is a need to educate the general public in Lagos on the need for practicing social distancing within the state and even in public places as the order on lockdown has been eased for over a week now.
