Just In: It’s official! Theresa May is the new UK Prime Minister

Amidst the Brexit crisis, David Cameron finally leaves No. 10 Downing Street for the last time, handing over the reigns of Britain to fellow Conservative party member, Theresa May.

After tending his resignation to the Queen, May formally accepted the monarch’s offer at Buckingham Palace with her husband, Phillip May and took her first steps officially as Britain’s new prime minister.

The procession comes after Cameron fell short of leading the country away from its decision to leave the European Union (EU) in last month’s referendum.

The 59-year-old former Home Secretary becomes the country’s second female prime minister after ‘Iron Lady’, Margaret Thatcher.

The swift transition of power comes after the nine-week leadership campaign was cut short following the surprise withdrawal of leading Brexit campaigner, Andrea Leadsom.

Over the next few days, May, who supported the vote to remain in the EU, will be expected to disclose her full ministerial team with more attention paid to the vital positions of chancellor and foreign secretary, in addition to who would drive the Brexit negotiations.

With her new position, there are talks of a high likelihood that May would promote several women to senior positions, including Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd and International Development Secretary.
