This is biased reporting – DHQ responds to allegations by British media

by James Sambo

The Defence Headquarters has faulted an Independent newspaper of London report which accused the Nigerian military of various human rights abuses including committing “war crimes by terrorizing some of its citizens in the war against insurgency” in northern Nigeria.

In two separate statements posted on the DHQ Website, the military described the video documentary and a news report which the newspaper published on the web as a part of a “biased and judgemental posture of a section of the western press who are prepared to go to any extent, even if it means parroting falsehood, just so to find avenue to denigrate African Governments and institutions”.

The DHQ said, “Independent did not lay claim to any sense of professionalism in coming out with that grossly unsubstantiated and bogus allegation against the Nigerian government. No credible independent source or government official was contacted “to ascertain the veracity of those wild claims yet the sanctimonious and all-knowing Daily Independent could not exercise any restraint to be sure of its story”.”

“Is it not preposterous to even suggest that “4000 people have died in military custody…” when it is on record that suspected terrorists are held in various facilities while being processed for prosecution? At what point then did 4000 people die in military custody? This ludicrous report did not come as a surprise to anybody since this biased mindset against Nigerian government has always characterized this newspaper even before the commencement of the ongoing counter-terrorist operation.

“The Independent newspaper and its ilk should be reminded that the Nigerian military and by extension the government cannot be intimidated by this patterned bias and supremacist mindset in reporting Africa. Having adopted this kind of judgemental posture, we will not be surprised by any phantom video they will release to support their wild claim. We therefore urge the general public to discountenance this obviously jaundiced report or whatever phantom video as it is all aimed at tarnishing the image of Nigerian military.

“The preposterous interrogative posture of Independent since the inception of the war on terror in Nigeria clearly questions the integrity of the said documentary and is therefore an indication of frantic effort at tarnishing the Nigerian military and ultimately the Nigerian nation. The so called documentary should therefore be taken with a pinch of the salt.”

‘Do you hate men?’ – 10 questions you should stop asking feminists

by Zainab Karim

Why are you so angry? This question detracts fr,om the real purpose of the feminist movement. Feminists are not angry they are avid about equal rights and emotions can sometimes rise when the principles of feminism are attacked.

Though feminism has been around for well over a hundred years, there are still people who don’t understand– or want to understand– its ideologies. There are a few questions that have been asked and answered over and over about the feminist movement and that should not be asked again. Like these.

WHY ARE YOU SO ANGRY?

This question detracts fr,om the real purpose of the feminist movement. Feminists are not angry they are avid about equal rights and emotions can sometimes rise when the principles of feminism are attacked. The question should be why are you NOT angry about inequality?

IF YOU’RE A FEMINIST, DOES THAT MEAN YOU DON’T HAVE SEX?

Mormon and Feminism: When did the two become synonymous? Aspiring feminists need not be virgins to apply.

ARE YOU A LESBIAN?

Some feminists are lesbians and some are not. Homosexuality isn’t a prerequisite to feminism.

WHY ARE YOU GETTING MARRIED?

Yes, many feminists fight for gender equality and want to be married too. Marriage does not equal oppression or forced submission to a man. Marriage is about a union and should also be about equality.

YOU HATE MEN?

This question is another detractor from the real cause. Feminism is about opening society’s eyes to the benefits of equality not burying the male sex.

CAN MEN BE FEMINISTS TOO?

They can be and should be. It’s a movement, not a sorority.

DO FEMINIST WEAR SKIRTS? MAKEUP? BRAS?

If a woman — or man– wants to wear a skirt, makeup, or a bra that is their choice. Feminism isn’t in direct opposition to looking/feeling good on the outside.

WHAT ABOUT MASCULISM?

What about it?

IF YOU’RE A FEMINIST, HOW COME YOU DON’T ASK MEN OUT?

Being a feminist doesn’t mean forcing yourself on men. If a woman does ask a man on a date it probably has more to do with her willingness to do so, not a desire to make a point about gender roles.

DO YOU JUST WISH YOU WERE A MAN?

Um, no! Feminism is about gender equality not gender obsession.
