The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun on Friday held a media parley where she intimated journalists on the projects the Federal Government is embarking on, the fight against corruption, revenue generation and the economic situation among other issues.

Here are five things we learned from the parley;

  1. A single seized jewellery can buy a house.

The Minister disclosed that the price of just a single piece of jewellery seized from former government officials could buy a house. However, she declined to give details of those who the jewellery were seized from.

2.  Import duties on used cars will be reduced.

The Finance minister said the government discovered that such import duties in neighbouring countries were 10 percent while Nigeria’s was 30 percent. She said this had encouraged smuggling, leading to revenue loss to the Federal Government.

3. Another N60bn to be released for capital projects.

Asides the initial N400 billion released for capital projects since May, the Federal Government will release another N60 billion.

4. About N200 billion has been collected from the targeted N1.5 trillion independent revenue in 2016.

The minister explained that about N200 billion has been collected of the N1.5 trillion projected independent revenue for the Federal Government in 2016,  but gave the assurance that innovative methods are being deployed to meet the target before the end of the year.

5. There is a delay between policy formulation and its effects on the economy.

Adeosun explained that the government was taking steps to expand the economy but there seems to be a delay between the policy formulation stage and when the effects start to manifest on the economy.
