Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has said there is a deliberate act to annoy and make him resign.
He said this after the opening ceremony of the 7th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCA) holding at the UN House in Vienna, capital of Austria.
What Magu said:
The anti-corruption czar said he would stand his ground and ensure he leaves a better Nigeria for the next generation.
“I have a conscience, in spite of the deliberate act to annoy me and make me think of throwing in the towel,” he said.
“My conscience tells me that I should not give up. I shall continue to fight the corruption war until my last breath.
“My dream is to leave a better Nigeria, free of corruption to the next generation. We cannot continue the way we are going; otherwise, there will be no Nigeria for the next generation.
“This rubbish called corruption was caused by my generation, so it is our duty to fight it and annihilate it. We must leave a better life for the next generation.”
Who is annoying Magu?
Magu was rejected twice by the National Assembly after President Muhammadu Buhari presented him for confirmation as permanent chairman of the country’s major anti-corruption powerhouse.
The lawmakers had cited a report by the Department of State Services, which indicted him of corrupt practices as reason for his rejection.
Failure to confirm Magu had led to a clash between the Presidency and the legislative after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo posited that the Presidency does not need the National Assembly’s approval to confirm him.
The lawmakers vowed not to approve any nominations from the Presidency but later rescinded on their decision.
It is believed that Magu’s rejection was in connection to corruption cases against senators who were governors and are on the EFCC watchlist.
Asides the Senate, the EFCC and DSS have not had the best of working relationships, especially with matters that concern corrupt individuals such as Sambo Dasuki and AbdulRasheed Maina.
The DSS at different times had refused to present Dasuki in court during cases involving the EFCC.
The secret police had also been accused of providing security to Maina who has been declared wanted by the EFCC.
