These are the top 10 stories that drove conversations this week.

  1. The Headies 2016

The 2016 edition of The Headies Award held in Lagos on Thursday with Kiss Daniel taking the night with three awards.

YBNL huncho, Olamide, Ill Bliss and Darey Art Alade all went home with two awards each.

The biggest story of the night was a scene that played out between Wizkid who won the artiste of the year award and Caesar, Eva Alordiah’s fiance.

Wizkid sparked controversy when he ‘ignored’ Caesar who tried to congratulate him and hugged Eva instead.

Many had believed it was intentional while others said it was just an oversight.

While responding, Wizkid said, “I honestly didn’t see my man”. 

2. Hungry and thirsty soldiers

A video of soldiers at the warfront in the North-East lamenting about their neglect by the Nigerian government went viral.

The soldiers were heard complaining about how their colleagues lose strength and collapse everyday due to lack of food and water.

The Nigerian Army in response to the video had said the incident happened six months ago and had been resolved.

Just after that, another video where the soldiers were scrambling for water delivered by an helicopter was released.

3. James Ibori gets his freedom

Former Delta State governor, James Ibori was released from a United Kingdom prison.

Ibori was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2012 after pleading guilty to money laundering and diversion of state funds.

He was however released on Wednesday following a court order that declined the UK government’s request for an extension of his sentence.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has started process to extradite him.

An appeal court had ruled that Ibori has a case to answer with the EFCC.

4. Ibori, The Kingmaker

Peter Nwaoboshi, a Delta State Senator narrated how former governor of Delta State, James Ibori decided who became governor of the state from prison.

While eulogizing him, Nwaoboshi said Ibori also supported a Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He also said the former governor made his daughter a State House of Assembly member from prison.

5. Plastic Rice invasion

The Nigerian Customs, Federal Unit Ikeja said it intercepted 102 bags of plastic rice.

The customs said the bags of rice were branded “Beat Tomato Rice’’ with no date of manufacture.

However, the Minister of Health,Isaac Adewole said preliminary laboratory tests revealed there was no evidence to back up the claims of the circulation of plastic rice.

6. Senate divided over Magu

The Senate has been divided over the ‘rejection’ of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Majority Leader, Ali Ndume insisted that the upper chamber has not rejected the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the EFCC chairman.

He said the Senate only suspended the confirmation until President Muhammadu Buhari makes a decision on the security report by the DSS.

But Spokesperson of the Senate, Aliyu Abdullahi said the Senate has officially rejected his nomination.

7. “The money spended were……”

Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung who has always got in trouble for his utterances made a gaffe yet again!!

While explaining to the Senate Committee on Sports why the Ministry was spending outside its budget, Dalung had said “The money spended were properly spended”.

8. LAKE Rice

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and his Kebbi counterpart, Atiku Bagudu launched the LAKE Rice, an initiative of both states to produce cheap rice.

The rice is being sold at N13,000.

In the same vein, President Muhammadu Buhari has commended both governors for the initiative, while stating that he was happy Nigerians could celebrate the holidays with cheap rice.

9. Arik – Chicken wings of Nigeria

Staff of Arik Air protested over non-payment of seven months salary arrears, non-remittance of taxes and other anti-labour practices.

The strike shut down activities leading to many passengers being stranded.

The airline resumed flight the next day with a huge backlog of passengers from the previous day.

10. The Future Awards Africa 2016

The 11th edition of The Future Awards Africa held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

Keynote speaker at the event was Ghana President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo who spoke on how the youths were taking over in all aspect.

Also present were Oby Ezekwesili, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi among others.
