Has the 2016 budget really gone missing from the National Assembly?

According to Daily Trust newspapers, the proposed budget for 2016 which was submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly in December, has reportedly gone missing.

The news of the missing budget was purportedly announced on Tuesday, January 12, in a closed door session that lasted for about 90 minutes.

A week after the budget was submitted to the National Assembly, news of its withdrawal by the Presidency, surfaced.

The grapevine suggested that owing to the massive critical reviews of the budget, the federal government secretly retrieved it for modification.

The senators were today, meant to begin discussion and consideration of the N6.08 trillion budget submitted by the president.

However, that proved to be impossible after the budget was allegedly declared missing by Senate Leader, Ali Ndume.

In reaction, senators of the Peoples Democratic Party have reportedly accused the presidency of stealing the budget following many perceived outrageous expenses inherent in the document which the PDP has openly criticized.

All Progressives Congress senators however, have also reportedly rejected the claim stating that it was to early to speculate.

The news of the missing budget proposal was disseminated by Ndume during a closed door session.

Meanwhile, Premium Times reported that Senator Ndume explained that the consideration of the said budget could not begin until new copies of the missing documents are obtained from the presidency, the Ministry of Finance or that of national planning.

The senate, in lieu of the development then mandated the Chairman, Senate Committee of Appropriation, Danjuma Goje to spearhead the search for the budget and relate with the presidency, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang, and the national planning ministry to find a solution to the problem.

The senators also decided to keep the loss of the budget a secret, deciding that news of the loss could embarrass the presidency, the National Assembly and the country.
